व्रत कथा
नारदजी ने कहा: ऎसा कहकर भगवान विष्णु मछली का रूप धारण कर के आकाश से जल में गिरे। उस समय विन्ध्याचल पर्वत पर तप कर रहे महर्षि कश्यप अपनी अंजलि में जल लेकर खड़े थे। भगवान उनकी अंजलि में जा गिरे। महर्षि कश्यप ने दया कर के उसे अपने कमण्डल में रख लिया। मछली के थोड़ा बड़ा होने पर महर्षि कश्यप ने उसे कुएं में डाल दिया। जब वह मछली कुएं में भी न समा सकी तो उन्होंने उसे तालाब में डाल दिया, जब वह तालाब में भी न आ सकी तो उन्होंने उसे समुद्र में डाल दिया।
वह मछली वहां भी बढ़ने लगी फिर मत्स्यरूपी भगवान विष्णु ने इस शंखासुर का वध किया और शंखासुर को हाथ में लेकर बद्रीवन में आ गये..
..वहाँ उन्होंने संपूर्ण ऋषियों को बुलाकर इस प्रकार आदेश दिया: मुनीश्वरों! तुम जल के भीतर बिखरे हुए वेदमंत्रों की खोज करो और जितनी जल्दी हो सके, उन्हें सागर के जल से बाहर निकाल लाओ तब तक मैं देवताओं के साथ प्रयाग में ठहरता हूँ। तब उन तपोबल सम्पन्न महर्षियों ने यज्ञ और बीजों सहित सम्पूर्ण वेद मन्त्रों का उद्धार किया। उनमें से जितने मंत्र जिस ऋषि ने उपलब्ध किए वही उन बीज मन्त्रों का उस दिन से ऋषि माना जाना लगा। तदनन्तर सब ऋषि एकत्र होकर प्रयाग में गये, वहाँ उन्होंने ब्रह्माजी सहित भगवान विष्णु को उपलब्ध हुए सभी वेद मन्त्र समर्पित कर दिए।
सब वेदों को पाकर ब्रह्माजी बहुत प्रसन्न हुए। उन्होंने देवताओं और ऋषियों के साथ प्रयाग में अश्वमेघ यज्ञ किया। यज्ञ समाप्त होने पर सब देवताओं ने भगवान से निवेदन किया: देवाधिदेव जगन्नाथ! इस स्थान पर ब्रह्माजी ने खोये हुए वेदों को पुन: प्राप्त किया है और हमने भी यहाँ आपके प्रसाद से यज्ञभाग पाये हैं। अत: यह स्थान पृथ्वी पर सबसे श्रेष्ठ, पुण्य की वृद्धि करने वाला एवं भोग तथा मोक्ष प्रदान करने वाला हो। साथ ही यह समय भी महापुण्यमय और ब्रह्मघाती आदि महापापियों की भी शुद्धि करने वाला हो तथा तय स्थान यहाँ दिये हुए दान को अक्षय बना देने वाला भी हो, यह वर दीजिए।
भगवान विष्णु बोले: देवताओं! तुमने जो कुछ कहा है, वह मुझे स्वीकार है, तुम्हारी इच्छा पूर्ण हो। आज से यह स्थान ब्रह्मक्षेत्र के नाम से प्रसिद्ध होगा, सूर्यवंश में उत्पन्न राजा भगीरथ यहाँ गंगा को ले आएंगे और वह यहाँ सूर्यकन्या यमुना से मिलेगी। ब्रह्माजी और तुम सब देवता मेरे साथ यहाँ निवास करो।
आज से यह तीर्थ तीर्थराज के नाम से विख्यात होगा। तीर्थराज के दर्शन से तत्काल सब पाप नष्ट हो जाएंगे। जब सूर्य मकर राशि में स्थित होगें उस समय यहाँ स्नान करने वाले मनुष्यों के सब पापों का यह तीर्थ नाश करेगा। यह काल भी मनुष्यों के लिए सदा महान पुण्य फल देने वाला होगा।
माघ में सूर्य के मकर राशि में स्थित होने पर यहाँ स्नान करने से सालोक्य आदि फल प्राप्त होंगे। देवाधिदेव भगवान विष्णु देवताओं से ऎसा कहकर ब्रह्माजी के साथ वहीं अन्तर्धान हो गये। तत्पश्चात इन्द्रादि देवता भी अपने अंश से प्रयाग में रहते हुए वहां से अन्तर्धान हो गये।
जो मनुष्य कार्तिक में तुलसी जी की जड़ के समीप श्रीहरि का पूजन करता है वह इस लोक में सम्पूर्ण भोगों का उपभोग कर के अन्त में वैकुण्ठ धाम को जाता है।
