नारद जी ने कहा: तब इन्द्रादिक देवता वहाँ से भय-कम्पित होकर भागते-भागते बैकुण्ठ में विष्णु जी के पास पहुंचे। देवताओं ने अपनी रक्षा के लिए उनकी स्तुति की। देवताओं की उस दीन वाणी को सुनकर करुणा सागर भगवान विष्णु ने उनसे कहा कि हे देवताओं! तुम भय को त्याग दो। मैं युद्ध में शीघ्र ही जलन्धर को देखूंगा।
ऐसा कहते ही भगवान गरुड़ पर जा बैठे तब समुद्र-तनया लक्ष्मी जी ने कहा कि हे नाथ! यदि मैं सर्वदा आपकी प्रिया और भक्ता हूँ तो मेरा भाई आप द्वारा युद्ध में नहीं मारा जाना चाहिए।
इस पर विष्णु जी ने कहा: अच्छा, यदि तुम्हारी ऐसी ही प्रीति है तो मैं उसे अपने हाथों से नहीं मारूंगा परन्तु युद्ध में अवश्य जाऊँगा क्योंकि देवताओं ने मेरी बड़ी स्तुति की है।
ऐसा कह भगवान विष्णु युद्ध के उस स्थान में जा पहुंचे जहाँ जलन्धर विद्यमान था। जलन्धर और विष्णु का घोर युद्ध हुआ। विष्णु के तेज से कम्पित देवता सिंहनाद करने लगे फिर तो अरुण के अनुज गरुड़ के पंखों की प्रबल वायु से पीड़ित हो दैत्य इस प्रकार घूमने लगे जैसे आँधी से बादल आकाश में घूमते हैं तब अपने वीर दैत्यों को पीड़ित होते देखकर जलन्धर ने क्रुद्ध हो विष्णु जी को उद्धत वचन कहकर उन पर कठोर आक्रमण कर दिया।
