व्रत कथा
पूर्वकाल में राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ राजा नल था उसकी रूपवती रानी का नाम दमयन्ती था। शाप वश राजा नल को राज्यच्युत खोना पड़ा और रानी के वियोग से कष्ट सहना पड़ा। तब दमयन्ती ने इस व्रत के प्रभाव से अपने पति को प्राप्त किया।
राजा नल के ऊपर विपत्तियों का पहाड़ टूट पड़ा था। डाकुओं ने उनके महल से धन, गजशाला से हाथी और घुड़शाला से घोड़े हरण कर लिये, तथा महल को अग्नि से जला दिया। राजा नल भी जुआ खेलकर सब हार गये।
नल असहाय होकर रानी के साथ वन को चले गए। शाप वश स्त्री से भी वियोग हो गया कहीं राजा और कहीं रानी दु:खी होकर देशाटन करने लगे।
एक समय वन में दमयन्ती को महर्षि शरभंग के दर्शन हुए। दमयन्ती ने मुनि को हाथ जोड़ नमस्कार किया और प्रार्थना की प्रभु! मैं अपने पति से किस प्रकार मिलूंगी?
शरभंग मुनि बोले: दमयन्ती! भादों की चौथ को एकदन्त गजानन की पूजा करनी चाहिए। तुम भक्ति और श्रद्धापूर्वक गणेश चौथ का व्रत करो तुम्हारे स्वामि तुम्हें मिल जाएंगे।
शरभंग मुनि के कहने पर दमयन्ती ने भादों की गणेश चौथ को व्रत आरम्भ किया और सात मास में ही अपने पुत्र और पति को प्राप्त किया। इस व्रत के प्रभाव से नल ने सभी सुख प्राप्त किये। विघ्न का नाश करने वाला तथा सुखा देने वाला यह सर्वोतम व्रत है।
